WIN
(Wellness in the Neighborhood)
This group is another collaborative piece that focuses on strengthening the neighborhoods surrounding Grace UMC, in the North West area of Rochester. The goal is to implement a wholistic approach from the ground up to establish a healthy community. Health is affected by many socio-economic factors, in addition to nutritional, environmental and medical needs surrounding that community. The approach is one of Asset Based Community Development, which is provocative plan that we first learned about through our association with CCDA (Christian Community Development Association).
Grace Community Village is the lead organization with Jane Ames being the lead coordinator of this consortium. This effort is planned in three phases and is being funded through the Greater Rochester Health Foundation. Project URGE has supported this effort, being a logical extension of the 4 Point Plan, which we have tried to inspire and prompt involvement in since 2006. Our involvement has been to support these efforts through resources, expertise and our recent Saturday Sonshine Program, which is aimed to bring education, spiritual wellness and entertainment to youth from 6-16 years of age.
This is another example of collaboration working as Project URGE, Grace Community Village and Child Evangelism Fellowship worked together to begin this program. In addition, Carol Orth, another Project URGE participant, started a Brownie Troop for neighborhood girls that will meet once a month.
